Before "Mickey Mouse" he was named Mortimer. This was changed upon request by Lillian Disney (Disney's wife). Although, the idea of Mortimer mouse was not thrown away, he was used in the future as Mickey Mouse's rival as he also wanted to win Minnie's affection.
