The "Big Meal" in Jesus' Time
Supper was the big meal during the time of Jesus. Supper happened around sundown. This was a time where people would be with their families and friends for a couple of hours. Even Supper was NOT a huge meal most of the time. People would usually eat some kind of stew, which was usually vegetarian. It would be eaten with more bread. The bread was baked in round, flat loaves to be folded like pita bread and used as a spoon. Meat was rare unless you were a hunter, or it was a special occasion.
