When to use a style

There are two basic documentation styles within the Chicago Manual of Style.  These include the Notes-Bibliography System and the Author-Date system.

The Notes-Bibliography system is used most within studies of the humanities.  This includes literature, history, and the arts.  This often includes bibliographic information within a bibliography or notes.

The Author-Date System is used in natural, physical, and social sciences.  Within this system sources are cited in the text, often within parentheses.
