After WWI, Martin joined the Freikorps (Free Corps), who believed that German Communists betrayed Germany in the War.

After getting out of prison for a political murder, Martin joined the National Socialist Party.

Other members of the Freikorps did this, most likely because of their shared political beliefs (for example, nationalism, dislike of communists).
