International Space Law, and What It Means for Martian Colonization

Space law is the "body of law applicable to and governing space related activities."

United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA)


-promotes international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space.

-103 countries have signed on since October, 1967

Has promulgated five international treaties that state that:


1) Space is a peaceful, non military zone. No nuclear weapons, military bases, installations or fortifications, weapons testing of military maneuvers.

2) All parties must assist astronauts in distress, and recover objects returned to Earth outside of the launching party's territory.

3) The launching party is liable to pay compensation for damage caused by their space property on Earth or on aircraft.

4) Parties are required to register the appropriate details.
