After Smalltalk was introduced, multiple efforts were undertaken to add object-oriented programming to C. Steve Jobs's NextStep adopted Objective-C, while many others adopted C++. Apple's Mac OS X is a continuation of NextStep, hence it has strong ties to Objective-C. Apple's iOS is an OS X derivative, and therefore also strong ties to Objective-C. With Swift, Apple is bringing more modern language syntax and features while maintaining bi-directional runtime compatibility with Objective-C
