The "Abba" Reference. Abba is an Aramaic word, which means "daddy, or dad," but is most commonly translated as "Father." The Jews used a lofty title when praying to God because they wanted to emphasize that God was great, divine, and there were no other creatures compared to him. Abba is the word Jesus used when praying to God, because only God's Son could have felt the freedom to utter such an intimate term of address. Jesus calls us all to call God Abba because he revealed himself to us. His saving acts on the cross made it possible for us to become children of God.
