Types of Sugar Alcohols

Sorbitol is about 60% as sweet as natural sugar. It is mainly found by hydrogenating the glucose found in cornstarch. FDA permits sorbitol to be used “at levels not to exceed good manufacturing practices.” They also require any foods with more than 50 grams of sorbitol to label that the food may create a laxative effect. Sorbitol is used mainly in hard and soft candies, jams, jellies, baked goods/mixes, chewing gum, and cough drops.
