Both Algernon and Rocket Raccoon were modified to increse their intelligence. This was unique and key to their storyline because they were both rodents, and it changed their lives forever. After the surgery, they were both one of a kind, with no one to relate to. This left Rocket Raccoon isolated and without a family. The surgery also had took a toll on Algernon's mental health.
