Description

-Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, commonly known as Progeria, is an invariably fatal genetic disorder that causes premature aging and early death in victims.

-Sporadic disorder

-Occurs randomly and very rarely occurs in families

-Children show signs of progeria in the first two years of life

Symptoms

-wrinkled skin

-slowed growth

-easily dislocated hips

-distinctive facial features

-premature hardening of arteries leading to cardiovascular problems

Occurrence

-97% of cases occur in Caucasians

-Affects more males than girls

~gender ratio of 1.5 boys to every girl

-The reason for this racial imbalance is unknown
