-Caused by a mutation on the first chromosome called the LMNA gene

-LMNA tells the cell how to make lamin A (protein that helps shape the nucleus)

-Affected lamin A is known as progerin

-Progerin is made when the farnesyl group remains attached to the prelamin instead of being removed from it

-Nucleus develops into a deformed, twisted shape instead of a normal one

-Believed to be passed through an autosomal dominant new mutation

-Research being done to identify a more precise mutation that causes Progeria
