Southeast Asia was rich in spices and because of the location, growth of plants and animals was also high. Also as they were mostly port cities, trade was also easy for the british.

"The Great Game" was a term for the strategic rivalry and conflict between the British Empire and the Russian Empire for supremacy in Central Asia.
