How was the United States able to become a major imperial and colonial power in the 19th century?

The United States emerged as imperial and colonial powers after the brief spanish american war. Anti Colonial reforms broke out in Cuba and Puerto Rico which the last lands from the Spanish Empire, this is where U.S. Businesses made large and important investments. The U.S. Soon gained large control over these countries after a violent surge had occurred.
