Vasco de Gama
In 1497 Vasco de Gama departed from Lisbon with four armed merchant ships to go to India. It did not go well, they did not see land for three months, and his cargo did not get much interest in the Indian markets, though the pepper and cinnamon were profitable. They built a trading post in Calcutta by 1500.
