The first shock was at 9:51 pm and lasted 35-40 seconds

The Damage

In the small town of Charleston, few buildings escaped without damage. Most were completely destroyed.

After Shocks

For the next 30 years more than 400 after shocks occurred in the Charleston area.

Within the first 60 seconds of the Charleston earthquake, it caused about 60 deaths, numerous injuries, economic losses of 23 million dollars, and physiological and social disruption over an area extending over 120 miles from the epicenter.
