- Hans and Rosa take Max into their home even though they know the dangers and even though they barely have enough money and food for themselves

- Leisel steals books and food and has to stand up for herself at school

- Rudy has to/tries to stand up to his leader at Hitler Youth

- Max has courage by being in hiding and being a Jew in the hard times
