The third crusade was called by Pope v111 in 1189 to take the Holy Lands backs.

Richard was held captive coming home from the holy lands in Austria until ransom was paid because Duke Leopold was an enemy of Richard after the crusade.Richard spent years held captive until 1192-1194.
