Confusion and Innocence

“Did God listen? Would he hear? Had he seen my father on the bridge? And where was Lupito's soul winging to, or was it washing down the river to the fertile valley of my uncles' farms? ... How would I ever wash away the blood from the sweet waters of my river!" (p.24-25)

Antonio has all these questions about God. Would God feel sorry about his death or was Lupito going to neither heaven nor hell? Antonio sees Lupito as something that has effected his innocence and what he believes. The "sweet water of my (Antonio's) river" refers to Antonio's innocence. Antonio faces the realities of world and matures.
