“Then like a coiled spring he jumped up, his pistol aimed straight up. There was a flash of fire and the loud report of the pistol. But he had not fired at Narciso or at any of the men on the bridge! The spotlights found him… ‘He’s firing! He’s firing!’ another voice shouted. ‘He’s crazy!’ Lupito’s pistol sounded again. Still he was not aiming at the men on the bridge. He was shooting to draw their fire!” (p.23)
The men on the bridge are innocent and are not aware of Lupito's true actions. To Antonio, Lupito was innocent and didn't have a chance. Antonio is aware of Lupito's actions and loses the innocence the men on the bridge have. In this way, already at a young age he sees the death of a man. Just at the beginning of the book, Antonio is growing up and learning of the darkness of the world.
