Key Terms

-No man's land: The land between the trenches. Soldiers would be vulnerable to gunfire here and would be shot down.


-Shellshock: Trauma caused by witnessing gruesome deaths of comrades and the grim conditions of war, very common in the unhygienic, tight spaces of the trenches.


-Parapet: Inner wall of a trench, constructed from sandbags.


-Fire steps: Steps that allowed soldiers to look over the parapet.


-Sap: A tunnel within a trench, dug to a point beneath enemy trenches.


-Armlet: A band of cloth worn around the arm to denote a particular duty or function.
