Early life
Born: 17 June 1898
Birthplace: Leeuwarden, Netherlands
- Was dignosed with Sickle cell cancer. This caused him to have many surgeries.
- Father, George Arnold Escher was a civil engineer
-Exceeded in drawing, but grades were poor.
- took carpentry and piano when he was 13 yrs old.
- Studied architecture but failed a number of classes because of skin infection caused by cancer.
In result he switched to decorative arts where he learned how to make wood cuts.
- Married Jetta Umiker and had three sons.
