- In 1940, McDaniel spent most of her time touring in the country as "Mammy"

- Conflict arrived when she became a victim of racial legal problems

- Involved in legal battle Los Angeles that gave little land and restricted home ownership rights to African-American

- In 1942, McDaniel purchased a home, but realized that she could have been thrown out

- In court, she defended that she had say so to choose whatever roles she approved of
