- Elizabeth Ann Bayley August 28, 1774 - January 4, 1821

- She was the first native born U.S. citizen to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church

- She was the second child of a wealthy couple Dr. Richard Bayley and Catherine Charlton of New York City.

- The Bayley and Charlton families were among the earliest European settlers in the New York area

- Her mother died when she was 3 years old

- Her stepmother participated in her church's social ministry and often took Elizabeth with her on her charitable rounds

- She visited the poor in their homes and donated food and other items
