Defining Technology

Technology may be defined in many ways. For our purposes, technology includes all tools, machines, utensils, weapons, instruments, housing, clothing, communicating and transporting devices, as well as the skills by which we produce and use them.

In this setting, we are especially interested in information technology, which typically refers to the “application of computers and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data.” (See Daintith, John, ed.
