• sacred to the Lakota Native Americans

• the landscape surrounding it is composed of mostly sedimentary rocks

• parallel cracks

How it Formed

• there used to be a shallow inland sea in central and western USA in Triassic time 225-195 million years ago, causing the sedement

• magma cooled and crystallized into a rock type called phonite porphy- greenish gray igneous rock 

• igneous intrusion, causing the sedimentary rocks to be pushed up

• erosion made the igneous underneath visible above the surface

• cooled and contacted into hexagonal columns
