St. Catherine of Siena was recognized for her great saintly practices, and became a saint by Pope Pius II in 1461. She became a doctor of the church by Pope Paul VI on October 3, 1970.
On June 18, 1866 she became one of the two patron saints of Italy. In October of 1999 Pope John Paul II proclaimed her one of the six patron saints of Europe.
