Even though the Janissaries answered to the Sultan and their lives resided in his power, they served as military elite, administrators, and made an impact in Ottoman government. The Ottoman Janissary Corps had been originally established to serve the Sultan and the Ottoman state, however over time the Janissaries sought to gain power for themselves and fulfill their own interests.
