After Coolidge finished college, he decided to study law. He spent the next two years working in Northampton, Massachusetts. There he learned everything he needed to become a lawyer. In 1898, Coolidge ran for a seat as city councilman. Coolidge relied on his direct manager to win one for him. He went door to door telling voters "I want your vote." Coolidge won the election. While practicing law and begin

his political career, Calvin met a young teacher named Grace Anna Goodhue. Grace taught at the Clark School for the deaf in Northampton. She graduated from the university of Vermont in 1902. Grace was the perfect balance for the quiet and serious Coolidge. They fell in love and were married in 1905. The couple soon had kids, John and Calvin. Through a lot of hard work, Coolidge slowly became involved in Massachusetts politics. In 1906 he won a seat in the state House of Representatives. As a state representative, he favored giving women the right to vote. Coolidge also favored having the U.S. Senators be voted directly by the people instead of having been voted of the state legislators. In 1909, Coolidge was elected mayor

Mayor of Northampton. While he was mayor he reduced taxes and was able to increase wages for teachers. In 1911, Calvin was elected state senate, and then soon became the senate president. In 1915, he was elected lieutenant governor, the second highest office in the state. Thigh his career had taken off, Coolidge was still smart with his money. In 1918, Coolidge ran for Governor of Massachusetts when he spoke, he stuck to the issues of the day and stood firm to his ideals of honesty and plain speech. Soon he was elected governor of Massachusetts.
