John Calvin Coolidge was born in Plymouth Notch, Vermont on July 4,1872. Coolidge had a sister named Abigail Grace, a mom named Victoria Moor, and a dad named John Calvin Coolidge. For a short time Coolidge was a student at Plymouth Elementary. His father ran the region's post office for a long time which was attached to their small 5 room cottage. Calvin's mother died when he was only 12 years old, which left Calvin's father, John Coolidge, to raise two children himself. After his one year of school, Calvin helped on the farm his father bought when Calvin was 4. When Calvin was 15, his dad sent him off to school in Ludlow, a town not far away from Notch. He attended Black River Academy for three years. During his three years Coolidge learned about government, politics, and the U.S. Constitution. Shortly before
Calvin graduated another disaster arrived. Fifteen year old Abigail Coolidge, who attended Black River Academy as well, became very sick and died. In 1891 Calvin entered Amherst College in Amherst Massachusetts. He took his education very seriously. In 1895, Coolidge graduated from Amherst college with honors.
