WHO ARE YOU

TALKING TO?

Teachers spend at least eight hours a day trying to find ways to talk to this organ. Finding ways to manipulate its thought process… If you actually take time to focus on what your talking to, its busy trying to run an entire body. One form of stimulus just doesn’t work.

WHO ARE YOU

TALKING TO?

Neurons transmit electrical impulses as the brain interacts with information. How can stimulate the brain to crave more stimuli?

THIS IS WHO YOU ARE

Myelination is a term in anatomy that is defined as the process of forming a myelin sheath around a nerve to allow nerve impulses to move more quickly. An example of myelination is the formation of myelin around the axons of the body. Glial cells (called oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system and Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system) produce an insulating material called myelin which wraps around nerve axons.

WHAT SKILLS CAN YOU INCORPORATE INTO INSTRUCTION TO FACILITATE MAKING?

WHY SHOULD WE ENCOURAGE INCORPORATING “MAKING” INTO A DAILY PRACTICE?

WHAT DOES SELF DIRECTED LEARNING LOOK LIKE IN THE MAKERSPACE SETTING?

HOW TO MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO “MAKE”

M Y S T E R Y

I N Q U I R Y

MAKING IDEAS CREATE A MYSTERY LET THEM MAKE MAKE THEM REFINE WHAT THEY MADE BRING BACK SHOW AND TELL IMPLEMENT “GENIUS HOUR” INCORPORATE MYSTERY HANGOUTS USE CODING IN STEAD OF A WORKSHEET

MYSTERY BOX CHALLENGE… THOSE MEDDLING KIDS

M Y S T E R Y

I N Q U I R Y

MYSTERY BOX CHALLENGE EXPLANATION: MYSTERY BOXES ARE A GREAT WAY TO SHARE NEW IDEAS, INTRODUCE NEW CONCEPTS AND DRIVE INQUIRY IN CLASSES. THE MORE STUDENTS GET TIME TO WONDER AND FIRE CONNECTIONS IN THE BRAIN, THE MORE BRAIN WILL BUILD THOSE CONNECTIONS FOR FASTER FIRING.

PAPER PLANE ACTIVITY

INSTRUCTIONS: WE WILL BUILD A PAPER AIRPLANE AND FLY IT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU WRITE YOUR NAME IN THE INSIDE OF YOUR PLANE. ALL PLANES WILL BE DUE AT THE END OF THE TIME PERIOD.

WE NEED YOUR PLANE TO BE ABLE TO CARRY AS MANY MARSHMALLOWS AS POSSIBLE. THE MARSHMALLOWS REPRESENT FOOD AND SUPPLIES FOR REFUGEES FLEEING FROM THE WAR IN THE MIDDLE EAST. PLEASE DISTINGUISH YOUR PLANE FROM THE WAR PLANES SO THAT THE PEOPLE WILL KNOW YOU ARE DROPPING FRIENDLY SUPPLIES.

“MAKING”

TEACHERS

HOW CAN YOU MOTIVATE TEACHERS TO MAKE & ENHANCE THE RIGOR AND RELEVANCE IN ANY CLASSROOM?

“Making” Teachers Characteristics

Encourage Creativity

Managers of Time

Ignition is about the set of signals and subconscious forces that create our identity; the moments that lead us to say that is who I want to be.

Making teachers use time as a tool to create meaningful learning experiences.

Encourage Collaboration

Challenge Students Daily

Making teachers encourage students to share ideas through SCRUMS or mini conferences, with their peers.

Making Teachers have an extraordinary sensitivity to the students they are teaching, customizing each message to each student’s personality. This means relationships and expectations must be set up and maintained.

Effective Systems

Begin with the End

Classroom management and student expectations must be communicated daily until students can function automatically. The nature of the making environment cultivates self directed learners, effective teacher use the lesson cycle to transition instruction

Making teachers understand that the ultimate goal in making is for students to thoroughly understand the concept. Making teachers differentiate summative and formative assessments to show mastery.

“Making” Ideas

High Tech

Begin a fashion design school . Begin by teaching kids to sew or crochet.

Start a coding club to learn Java or HTML

Low Tech

High Tech

“Make use of “ Plastics that have been thrown away

Start a robotics club and have students build a robot out of cardboard.

Low Tech

High Tech

Tinker cam: Dissemble and Reassemble a product and take artistic pictures with the components.

Ask students to make a mobile app for the school, like a mobile library check out system for books.

“Making” Ideas

High Tech

Build Plastic straw structures.

Remove electronics from old toys and create a new one.

Low Tech

High Tech

Introduce students to photography and apply it to cirricular activities.

Start a film club and have film challenges that compete with other classes on filming.

Low Tech

High Tech

Have students plant a garden and document the process of plant growth and yield.

Have students program Makey Makeys, Arduino’s, and Raspberry Pi’s and enter them into competitions.
