John Thomas Scopes was a high school teacher substituting for one of the school's science teachers. In using the class textbook (which talked about evolution), he taught the kids about the process of evolution. This upset John W. Butler because ideas like evolution made some kids tell their parents the Bible was nonsense. Through the Butler Act, Scopes was put on trial for essentially breaking the law in a place of education.
