Chartism movement
A workers' movement which asked for a charter of social reforms.
In 1838 the workers drew up a People's Charter, a petition in six points asking for:
-Universal suffrage
-Vote by ballot
-Annual Parliament and payment of its members
-Abolition of the Property Qualification
-Equal Electoral District
The Chartists presented their petition to the House of Commons three times but each time it was rejected.
Trade unions
In 1871, the trade unions were legalized and with them the first socialist ideas appeared in the country. Gradually a small part of the liberal party gave rise to a new political party called Labour party.
The Labour Party
In 1892 the Independent Labour Party was founded, which changed in the modern British Labour Party in 1900.
