These extinct cats are known for two huge teeth among other sharp teeth with strong jaws. They also had very strong neck muscles that let them stab prey with their teeth. They ate mammoth, rhinoceros, and other thick-skinned animals. There were two major groups of saber-toothed cats: scimitar-toothed and dirk-toothed cats. Fossils have been found in Pliocene to early Pleistocene rocks from both North and South America and other Northern continents. This species seems to be found north and south of the equator.
