oFocus concept/ strategy: Display the book so the whole class is able to see the words. Inform the students to pay close attention to how many syllables are in each line. Keep track by writing the number of syllables are on the board. Ask if anyone notices a pattern and have them explain their theory to the class. Finish the book and explain in greater detail what a haiku is (5-7-5) and have students write their own.
