In the final sentence of the book, Carlson says, "Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin' them two guys?" (Steinbeck 107. Carlson fails to understood the deep bond that Lennie and George had and the pain that George was feeling at that moment. Curley also fails to understood how Slim and George have any emotional response after George shot Lennie. Steinbeck is analyzing groups of people in this world and this book. The final sentence leaves you wondering which category you fall into.
