Author's perspective:
I think he feels that if you lie you could end up hurting someone's feelings even more. Which was, very true in this book. Juli could've sold her eggs and made money instead of giving them to Bryce but he threw them away!? Who does that? If Bryce told her he wouldn't have the worry and guilt weighing his shoulders down.

Real life perspective:
Well, it's basically the same but, in real life half the time the person you lied to never figures out. When they do, it can break up friendships and mess up all sorts of things. It only leaks out when you talk about to someone else who knows the person you lied to. And we wouldn't want that to happen.
