What was a Vassal?

A vassal's main part was to be the assistant or second person in command to who their lord was. They were in charge of recruiting men for the lords army and train them to go to war. They had many responsibilities and in return was granted land and protection. 

They were also responsible for helping The Lord make important decisions and helping decisions in lord court for criminals.
