After his presidency, James Monroe and his wife moved to their estate called. Oak Hill in Virginia. In 1826, Monroe was appointed to the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia and became the president of the Virginia Constitutional Convention. Monroe began writing an autobiography but never completed it.
