Introduction
Most of the Taiga land consists of hills, valleys, lowlands, mountains, and plains. Bodies of water are one of the few things that surround the Boreal Forest (it is a different name for Taiga Biome). There are two major types of taiga: closed forest, consisting of many closely-spaced trees with mossy ground cover and lichen woodland with trees that are farther-spaced and lichen ground cover. The landscape is composed of thousands of lakes and wetlands that exist in depressions formed by glaciers. The lower areas consist mainly of peatlands, and are frequently waterlogged or wet for extended periods.
"The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness."
-John Muir
Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher
