Extremists do not have to be in control to strike terror into innocent civilians. Africa has recently been terrorized by Islamic extremists. These extremists kidnapped school girls from a government school. This extremist group in particular has killed more than 1,500 people this year. The kidnapping occurred on May 5, 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria. The fundamentalists claim that Western education is sinful and against their religion. The group has threatened to sell the girls, however, the intentions of the extremists are still unclear. The picture displays women protesting and calling upon the government to save their kidnapped children. This seems relevant to the book since anything remotely Western was frowned upon, and women were treated like they were not as good as men.
