What were/ are aqueducts

Aqueducts were first used during the Roman times. Is it not used anymore? The answer is that aqueducts are still used in a modified way today. Back in the days, aqueducts were used to conduct a a stream of water through valleys and such. Nowadays, aqueducts are basically a bunch of pipes and pumps giving water to other cities.
