James Van Der Zee was born on June 29,1886 in Lenox, Massachusetts. Van Der Zee developed a passion for photography during his teen years. In 1906, James departed for Harlem, New York with his older brother. He would wind up doing photography work for the Hampton Institute. By 1916, Van Der Zee would open up his own studio in Harlem; Guarentee Photo. Years later he would change the name of his studio to GGG Studio.
