General overview (continued)

•In 1919 the government of India act was introduced. This provided a parliament with two houses for India
•This allowed five million of the wealthiest Indians to vote, which was only a tiny portion of India's population
•Riots broke out and the most famous one was at Amritsar in the Punjab where 379 unarmed protesters were shot by British soldiers, 1200 were injured
The 1920's in India were changed by the appearance of a man. Mahatma Gandhi encouraged protesters to protest peacefully by holding sit ins and refusing to pay taxes.
In the 1930's the rivalry between the Muslims and the Hindus grew with a new governmental act that was put into place
In 1947 the Indian independence act was signed. This created place for Muslims to live. It was a new country called Pakistan.
