1947 was the end of WWII
• India hoped to be rewarded by the British for providing many troops to help in the war.
• They wanted to become their own nation
• India's population mostly consisted of Hindus
• Sikhs and Muslims were the minority
• Hindus and Muslims clashed over beliefs
• Muslims wanted their own country and government
• They were worried they would have no religious rights under the Hindu rule
Results: British India split into mostly Hindu (and Sikh). Muslims got their own state called Pakistan.
