Challenge: A significant percentage of the global population is food insecure. Available food is often unsafe or it does not have sufficient nutritional value to meet basic health requirements

Solution:

Increased innovation flows throughout the value / supply chains of local food systems from production to consumption and the markets that incentivize these flows.

The purpose of such "innovation portfolios" is to spur and apply innovation that anticipates and addresses these challenges and thwarts or lessens their impact.

Challenge: Over the balance of this century, projections indicate that the global population will double to 14 billion.

Challenge: During this same time, the effects of climate change will disrupt traditional agricultural portfolios and practices.

These factors alone will present serious challenges for political stability, economic growth, and resource sustainability overall combined with a reasonable quality of life a majority of the population.

Challenge: Limited arable land coupled with persistent urbanization increase pressure on natural resources and drive need for improved agricultural productivity
