The internal conflict in the story is Albert constantly battling with himself. He fails at everything he does unless a robot is made. "Albert himself wasn't much good for anything. But he had in himself the low knack for making machines that were good at everything." (159)

The external conflict in the story is Albert versus the robots he makes and society. There are times that Alberts robots rule his life and he is not in control.
