Wars are not good for any country and can cause major effects on the citizens of the country and to the countries as a whole. In this picture a soldier from the war is hiding in a hole in the ground with a chemical weapon, This was happening during the war because both countries wanted to win, so they were forced to bring out chemical weapons to use against each other. The significance of this picture to the novel is it shows what it was like in the war for the soldiers, because in the novel they were living right through the war, so tis is what was happening that we didn't get to see in the novel. The gas mask the soldier is wearing is being worn because he is using a chemical weapon and doesn't not want to be poisoned by it whenever he uses it.
