FIFTY YEARS WITH ALTOONA’S VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT
Gordon Gill, a lifelong resident of Altoona, Iowa, started working with the Altoona Herald when he was 16 years old. At 18, he went into the military service. After serving his country, and returning home, he went back to work with the newspaper.
Gordon was married to Louise Harding at age 25. About ten years later, he bought the newspaper. Louise assisted him with the newspaper. They had a son, Greg. Gordon owned the paper for 23 years, and then sold it in approximately 1987.
Gordon Gill served 50 years with the Altoona Volunteer Fire Department. Forty of those years were spent as the Fire Chief. Gordon was not the only longtime firefighter, as his brother-in-law, Jerry Harding, also served 50 years. Jerry was Assistant Fire Chief for 35 years, and also secretary of the Fire Department for 37 years.
