Machine Gun was inspired by the Vietnam War, the Black Panther Party, and personal business struggles. It is a protest song for any kind of conflict. Their performances of this song used long guitar solos and percussive riffs combined with controlled feedback to stimulate sounds of a battlefield and wounded soldiers screaming while gunshots go off.

The song that led people to psychedelic rock songs, Purple Haze often referred to acid culture. However, Charles Cross said, "Though the tune would be linked forever, Jimi said it was inspired by the dream he had that mirrored a novel-- Night of Light: Day of Dreams."

After leaving behind a band for another, Hendrix entered an experimental era with his music. While performing at Woodstock, he played the Star Spangled Banner and raised much controversy with his guitar solo, distorting the pitch of the song which was seen as disrespectful to veterans and others.
