Women in Sparta

3 groups of people in Sparta :

- citizens: only one with political power

- perioikoi- free without any political rights

- helots - serfs owned by the state and did all the agricultural work


Daily life :

- boys lived at home with their mothers until age 7 then they went off to train for the military

- boys got married in their 20's and girls got married around age 18 (later then Athens women got married

- women's primary role was to raise their children but in Sparta they believed women could better preform this job if they were in shape and fit.
